Transcript:How to Make Fried CauliflowerHi, I am Gina Miller with About.com Food. Today I am making fried cauliflower. Cauliflower is one of those vegetables that may not be a favorite and is an acquired taste for some people, but this recipe is surprisingly tasty and could be a big hit at your next dinner party or family dinner!
Fried Cauliflower IngredientsThe ingredients you will need for the fried cauliflower are:
- 1 head cauliflower, cored and separated to bite size florets/tips
- 2 eggs, beaten
- 1 1/2 cups of all purpose flour
- 1/2 teaspoon of salt
- 1/4 teaspoon of pepper
- 1 cup of low fat milk
- 1 tablespoon of ground cumin
- 1 cup of vegetable oil
- Paprika, salt and pepper to taste
Prepare Your Fried CauliflowerTo prepare the fried cauliflower: bring a large pot of water to boil using a steamer basket. Place the cauliflower tips in the steamer basket, cooking for about 5-7 minutes, until slightly tender. Do not overcook. Then, drain and set aside. Here is a tip: if you don't have a steamer basket, you can use aluminum foil. Simply shape the foil into balls and place in the bottom of a pot with small amount of water and place the vegetables over the foil balls to effectively steam the cauliflower for 5-7 minutes. Now, back to making the fried cauliflower. In a bowl, combine eggs, milk, cumin, salt and pepper.
Frying the CauliflowerNow, heat the oil in a deep skillet or deep fryer to 350 degrees. Dip the cauliflower tips in the egg mixture, dredge in flower, shake off excess flower and place on a separate plate. To fry, carefully drop in several cauliflower pieces into the hot oil with a slotted spoon. Do not overcrowd the deep fryer, just 4-6 at a time is probably sufficient. Cook until browned on both sides, remove, and drain on paper towels. Sprinkle the hot cauliflower with the remaining paprika, salt and pepper, and serve. This is a great side dish to have with steak or chicken, or it's a great snack to have all by itself. This recipe Serves 4 to 6 people.
