Transcript:How to Make French Toast Sticks

Hi, I'm Stephanie Gallagher for About.com, and today, we're making French toast sticks.

Ingredients for French Toast Sticks

For this recipe, you will need:
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1/4 cup milk or half and half
  • 1/4 tsp. vanilla
  • 1/4 tsp. ground cinnamon
  • 5-6 slices of bread - use whole wheat to increase the nutritional value of this recipe
  • 2 Tbsp. butter

Instructions for Making French Toast Sticks

Combine the eggs, milk, vanilla and cinnamon in a mixing bowl. Whisk until fluffy. And if you wanted to, you could add a pinch of salt at this point, too.Cut the crusts off the bread. Then cut the bread into 1/4-inch strips. You should be able to get about 4 sticks per slice of bread.Melt the butter in a large saucepan. I like to use a cast iron skillet, because it browns the French toast sticks nicely.And dip the bread pieces into the egg mixture, then add to the skillet. Cook the French toast sticks until they become browned on the bottom, about 3-5 minutes. You can use tongs to peek and see if they're ready to flip.When they've browned on the first side, flip, and cook on the other side until golden brown. It'll take another 2-5 minutes, depending on how hot the pan is.Serve the French toast sticks with warm maple syrup.
