Transcript:How to Make French Apple Cobbler

Hi, I am Gina Miller with About.com Food, and today, I'm making a delightful dessert, French apple cobbler. This is a vintage recipe handed down by home cooks and pastry chefs for centuries, and what makes it different from basic cobbler recipes is the topping, which is similar to cake, rather than typical pie crust.

French Apple Cobbler Ingredients

Here are the ingredients you will need; first, the apple filling:
  • 5 cups tart green apples, peeled and cut in 1/4 inch slices
  • 3/4 cup of sugar
  • 2 tablespoons of flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon of salt
  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup of water
  • 1 tablespoon of butter, softened
Here's a tip: You can add more texture to the mix by adding raisins and your favorite chopped nuts. Now the ingredients for the cobbler cake-like topping:
  • 1 cup of ready to use biscuit mix
  • 1/2 cup of milk
  • 1/2 cup of white sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 cup of brown sugar
  • 1/3 cup melted butter
  • 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon

Baking the French Apple Cobbler

Now let's get started with the apple filling. In a medium bowl, combine the apples, sugar, flour, cinnamon, salt, vanilla and water. Lightly mix. Now turn the mixture into a lightly buttered 9-inch square pan and dot the apples with 1 tablespoon of butter. Pre-heat the oven to 350º F. In a bowl, mix the biscuit mix, milk, white sugar, egg, brown sugar, butter and cinnamon. Beat with a wooden spoon until the batter is smooth. Drop the batter over the apples, spacing evenly. The batter will spread during baking. Bake 35 to 45 minutes at 350° or until the apples are tender and the crust is golden brown. Serve warm with whipped cream or ice cream. This recipe serves 6 to 8 people and your family will love it.
