Whenever I'm in the mood for ahearty classic dish that is perfect for a either a crowd of people or just the family Iturn to Classic Chicken Casserole. Its simple, delicious and will be ready in no time. Let's get started.

Ingredients for Classic Chicken Casserole

For this recipe you will need:

  • Two cups of soft bread cubes
  • One half cup of shredded cheddar cheese
  • Two tablespoons of melted butter
  • One cup of cooked frozen mixed vegetables
  • Two tablespoons of chopped onion
  • Three tablespoons of butter
  • Three tablespoons of all purpose flour
  • One teaspoon of salt
  • One eighth teaspoon of pepper
  • One and one half cups of milk
  • Four tablespoons of butter
  • One and one half cups of cooked chicken
  • And one large sliced tomato

Supplies for Classic Chicken Casserole

  • A one and a half quart casserole dish
  • A mixing bowl
  • And a wooden spoon

Instructions for Making Classic Chicken Casserole

To start off in your mixing bowl combine your bread cubes, melted butter andcheese, mixing well.Next, grab your casserole dish and one tablespoon of butter and coat the inside ofthe casserole dish with the butter. Go ahead and use a napkin or a paper towel tohelp you do this so you don't get butter all over your hand. Once you have your casserole dish prepped and ready grab the bread mixture andadd half of it to the bottom of the casserole dish, spreading it evenly.

Additional Instructions for Classic Chicken Casserole

Next take yourmixed vegetables and spread on top of the bread mixture.Now, take your chicken and spread evenly on top of your vegetables. Next, spread your remaining 3 tablespoons of butter, onions, flour, salt, pepper, and milk on top of the chicken. Take your tomato slices and arrange over the sauce. Now take your remainingbread mixture and arrange over top.

Pop your casserole in the oven at three hundred and twenty five degrees for about 30 minutes or until hot, bubbly and lightly browned. And don't worry aboutundercooked chicken. Since all the ingredients are pre-cooked, once this is nice andgolden brown its done!

For a little variety to this dish, try something different and add some mushroomsor even some marsala wine to the sauce while cooking for an added burst of flavor. You can also add some red pepper flakes or diced chilis to give it a real kick. Once you remove this from the oven, make sure you let it sit for about 10 minutes before serving to give it time to cool off a bit and let the sauce thicken up. Serve this along side a green salad and you are all set.
