Transcript:How to Make Chocolate Chip Banana Bread

Hi, I'm Jen D'Amore for About.com, and this video is all about how to make chocolate chip banana bread, using a recipe from About.com's Southern Food site.

Chocolate Chip Banana Bread Ingredients

You'll need:
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 4 ounces butter, softened
  • 1 1/2 cups mashed bananas
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup of semisweet chocolate chips

Make Chocolate Chip Banana Bread Dough

First, cream the sugar and butter. This is adding air and making the butter fluffy. Then, gradually add sugar and continue to beat until the grainy texture turns smooth. Then, beat in the mashed bananas, eggs, and vanilla. The bananas that you use can be from yellow to brown, so it's a great way to use up those browning bananas that won't otherwise be eaten. In a separate bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt, and stir it into the first mixture until moistened. Then, fold in the chocolate chips. Semi-sweet are the best to use. You could also add walnuts and fold them in with the chocolate chips.

Baking the Chocolate Chip Banana Bread

Pour the batter into a greased and floured loaf pan. Cover loosely with a tent of aluminum foil and bake at 325° for 30 minutes. Then, remove the foil and continue baking for 30 to 40 minutes, or until you can insert and remove a toothpick without anything sticking to it. Let it cool for 10 minutes, then remove it from the pan and cool the banana bread completely before slicing. Banana bread can always be reheated or toasted, and enjoyed with a pat of butter and, of course, a glass of milk.
