Transcript:How to Make Baked French Toast

Hi, I'm Stephanie Gallagher for About.com, and today, we're making a baked French toast from our Southern Food site.

Ingredients for Baked French Toast

For this recipe, you will need:
  • 1 loaf of French or Italian bread, preferably stale - this helps the bread soak up the custard better
  • 8 large eggs
  • 3-1/2 cups whole milk
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1 tsp. vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp. ground cinnamon

Instructions for Baked French Toast

Butter a 9 x 13 baking dish. Cut the bread into slices, about 1-inch thick. Arrange the bread slices in the baking dish - you can tear them to fit if necessary. Make a second layer on top of the first.Crack the eggs into a large mixing bowl. Add the milk, brown sugar, vanilla and cinnamon. Whisk it until well blended, and pour the custard over the bread slices, making sure to coat them evenly.Press down on the bread to help it soak up the custard. Cover with foil or plastic wrap, and refrigerate overnight. When you're ready to bake, preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Make the topping.

Toppiong for Baked French Toast

You will need:
  • 1/3 cup flour
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon
  • 4 Tbsp. butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup finely-chopped pecans (optional)

How to Make the Topping for Baked French Toast

Place the flour, sugar and cinnamon in a mixing bowl. Add a pinch of salt. Now add the butter and use a pastry blender or your hands to form it into coarse crumbs. When the mixture is crumbly, add the pecans if you're using them, and then sprinkle the topping over the French toast casserole. Bake for 25 to 35 minutes until golden brown. Here's your baked French toast casserole.
