Hi I am Gina Miller with About.com Food.

Information About How to Fry Okra

Today I am making Fried Okra, this is a big, Southern favorite vegetable often served as a side dish with seafood, Cajun cuisine, chicken fried steak, and Southern BBQ cuisine.

Ingredients for Frying Okra

The ingredients you will need for the friend okra are:
  • 1 lb of whole fresh okra cut into cubed bite size pieces
  • 2 eggs beaten
  • 1 1/2 cups of yellow course cornmeal
  • 1/2 teaspoon of salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon of pepper
  • 1 cup of low fat milk
  • 2 tablespoon of Louisiana hot sauce
  • 1 cup of vegetable oil
  • Paprika
  • salt and pepper to taste

Instructions for How to Fry Okra

To prepare the fried Okra: Wash the fresh okra and chop in bite size pieces approximately 1/2 inches cubes or less. In a bowl, Combine eggs, milk, hot sauce, salt & pepper. Heat the oil in a deep skillet or deep fryer to 350 degrees. Now dip the okra pieces in the egg mixture, then dredge in cornmeal, shake off excess cornmeal and place on a separate plate. To fry, carefully drop in several okra pieces into the hot oil with a slotted spoon, Do not overcrowd the deep fryer, 8-10 pieces at a time is probably sufficient. Cook until browned on both sides, remove and drain on a plate with paper towels. Sprinkle the hot okra with the remaining paprika, salt & pepper and serve. This recipe serves 4 to 6 people.
