Transcript: Coleslaw Recipe

Hi, I am Gretchen Siegchrist for About.com Food, and I am going to show you an easy recipe for coleslaw.

Coleslaw Ingredients

For this recipe, you will need:
  • 1 small cabbage, about two pounds
  • 2 medium carrots
  • 1 small onion
  • 3 tablespoons cider vinegar
  • 4 teaspoons salt
  • 1/3 cup mayonnaise
  • 1/3 cup sour cream

Prepare the Cabbage

Remove the core that runs up the center of the cabbage. This part is very tough, and you do not want it in your coleslaw. Then, finely chop the remaining parts of the cabbage.

Combine the Coleslaw Ingredients

Place the cabbage in a large bowl, and toss it with the vinegar and the salt. Use a cheese grater to shred the onion and the carrots. Then, place these in the bowl with the cabbage.

Add the mayonnaise and the sour cream, and mix everything together well.

Refrigerate the Coleslaw

Place the salad in the refrigerator, and let it sit at least an hour before serving. This will allow the cabbage to become soft and tender.
