Hi, I'm Aubrey with About.com and today we're going to make a classic apple crisp.

To Make the Apple Crisp, You Will Need:

  • 3 pounds of tart apples
  • 2 tbsp of lemon juice
  • 1/2 cup of packed light brown sugar
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1/3 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/3 cup rolled oats
  • 4 tbsp cold butter (1/2 stick)
  • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts or pecans.

Cover Apples With Lemon Juice to Prevent Browning

To begin, preheat your oven to 375°. Cut the apple in half with a sharp knife, take the half and slice on either side of the core. Then slice across the bottom of the core. Peel and cut the apples into thin slices with a pairing knife. Roll your palm over the lemon so it is easier to juice. Cut it in half and squeeze over the apples. A medium lemon makes about 2 tbs of juice.

Bake the Crisp Until Apples Are Tender

In a separate bowl, combine the brown sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg; add to the apples and mix with your fingers. In another bowl combine the flour, sugar and oats. Cut the butter into 8 small pieces. Now, cut the butter into flour until the mixture is crumbly. You can use a pastry cutter or two forks. Stir in the chopped nuts. Butter a 9-inch square baking dish. Spread the apple mixture in bottom of baking dish, sprinkle with the topping mixture. Bake at 375° for 30 to 45 minutes, or until apples are tender and topping is lightly browned.
