Hi, I'm Rachel Edelman for About.com Food. Today I'm going to show you how to make chicken fried steak.

Chicken Fried Steak Ingredients

For this recipe you will need:
  • cube steaks
  • 1 cup flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup plain or seasoned bread crumbs
  • oil for frying

Tenderize the Steak

First, place some plastic wrap on your cutting board. Place the steak on it, and then cover it with another sheet of plastic.

With a meat tenderizer, pound the meat until it's nice and thin. You can also buy the meat already prepared this way at the store.

Add Seasonings to the Flour

Next, prepare the flour by adding about a teaspoon of both salt and pepper. Also add the garlic powder and any other seasonings. Mix it together and pour it on a plate or shallow bowl.

Prepare the Ingredients

Then crack and beat the egg. Pour the egg in a second shallow bowl. On a third plate, you'll have the breadcrumbs.

On your counter, place the plates in the order of flour, egg, and breadcrumbs, because this will be your dipping order for the steak.

Heat the Oil in a Frying Pan

Place a frying pan on medium-high heat and pour in about a 1/2 inch of oil. You can test that the oil is hot by sprinkling a bit of water on it. If it sizzles, it's ready.

Coat and Fry the Steak

Now, dip the steak first in the flour and make sure it's well coated. Then, dip it in the egg. Lastly, dip it in the breadcrumbs.

Then place the steak into the pan. Always be very careful whenever working with oil and a gas stove. Fry until the coating is a golden brown. Serve with mashed potatoes for a delicious meal.
