Hi, my name is Nadia Chapman for About.com. Skateboarding is a popular sport, and today's market has a huge variety of skateboarding shoes to choose from. Skating is also a self-expressive sport, so different skaters might have different taste when it comes to picking the perfect shoe. However there are some important things to look for.

Where to Buy Skateboarding Shoes

Today, I am taking you to Church of Skatan in Santa Barbara, Calif. to show you how to buy skateboarding shoes. The best place for a wide variety of skate shoes is of course your local skate shop. Some surf shops can also offer a selection of skate shoes, and if you don't have those in your area, hit your local shoe store.

If you have a preference for a brand, and know your shoe size with them, you can go online but, if not, you risk getting shoes that won't fit right or might be uncomfortable. It is easy to get overwhelmed with the various brands and styles that are on the market.

What to Look For When You Buy Skateboarding Shoes

Good skate shoes have a flat and large rubbery sole that helps the skater with balance, and grip while ridding. Most of them are designed with extra padding on the tongue, the side, and/or around the ankle -- this helps prevent injuries when coming in contact with the ground or with the skateboard.

The strong stitching and thicker fabrics also ensure durability since your skate shoes will be exposed to more than regular shoes. More skate shoes are being made with gel inserts, which add extra comfort and stability. Some shoes also offer the latest in shoe technology, for instance the vulcanized rubber soles which is basically a long piece of rubber that wraps around the shoe. Vulcanized soles are easier to bend and more flexible then regular rubber soles.

Make Sure You Get a Good Fit When You Buy Skateboarding Shoes

Try a pair you like and that fits your budget. The shoes should feel comfortable and be flexible. Make sure the size is right -- don't get shoes that feel big or are too tight. If you want more ankle support, go for high-top skate shoes.

Skateboarding shoes come in all shapes and sizes, so it's really up to you to find a pair that fits your needs. But, don't skimp on the quality, shoes are an important part of skateboarding.
