Transcript:Tips for Preparing Shoes For Long-Term StorageHi! I'm Debbie Anderson for About.com! If you don't have a enough room for all of your shoes, today I'm going show a few easy tips on how to prepare your shoes for long-term storage.
To Prepare Shoes for Storage, You Will Need:
- Leather shoe polish
- Clean soft cloths
- A shoeshine brush
- An old toothbrush
- Baking soda
- Shoe organizing storage container.
Clean and Polish Your Shoes Before Storing Them AwayFirst, use a clean damp cloth or a shoeshine brush to remove any dust or dirt on the surfaces of your shoes. Next, for leather shoes, apply a small amount of shoe polish to any leather shoes you want to store. Apply the polish with a soft cloth in a small circular motion until all of the leather surfaces of the shoes are covered with the shoe polish.
As an added tip – use an old toothbrush to apply leather shoe polish to small crevices and difficult to reach spots on the leather surfaces. Allow the shoe polish to sit for approximately 15 minutes. Next, use quick, brisk strokes with the shoeshine brush across the leather polished surfaces until the leather polish is smooth and glossy on the surface of the leather. Then, use a clean soft cloth to buff the leather to a full shine for each of the leather shoes you want to store.
Once all of the shoes are clean and dry, sprinkle a small pinch of baking soda in the insoles of each of the shoes you are storing and this will help prevent offensive odors from ruining your shoes during storage.
Fit Shoes Properly in a Storage ContainerNext, use a shoe organizing storage container with separate slots for each pair of shoes to hold the shoes you wish to store. To protect the soles and the tops of your shoes, place each pair of shoes in the separate storage compartments inside the organizer so that the sole of each shoe is facing away from the other. This will prevent the soles of the shoes from scuffing the shiny surfaces of the shoes during storage.
Finally, place the shoe organizing storage container in a safe and out of the way location in the home.Thank you for watching! To learn more, please visit us on the web at About.com!
