Hi I'm Matt Petterson for About.com. Shopping online is incredibly convenient, and it often yields the best bargains. But sometimes your package arrives and it's just not what you were expecting. Don't worry; if for whatever reason you need to send your item back, arranging an online return is incredibly simple and can be done at little additional cost.

Supplies for When You Return Online Purchases

To return your purchase you'll need:

• the item you are returning
• a shipping box
• packing tape
• and a return label

Instructions for How to Return Online Purchases

Gather the materials that were shipped to you. If you saved the original box, re-pack it carefully. If you don't have the original box, you can easily pick one up at your local courier store, post office, supermarket or pharmacy, or even use any sturdy box you have lying around your house. Use bubble wrap or packing peanuts as necessary to secure your item in the box. If you don't have any, use crumpled up newspaper or pieces of paper shopping bag. When everything is secure, seal it with packing tape.

Shipping Labels for Returning Online Purchases

Sign on to the website where you made the purchase. On the "My Account" page, click "Return Items." Select the items that you are returning and follow the prompts. You will be directed to print a shipping label. Cut the return label to fit and affix it the box. Secure the edges of the label with packing tape, but leave the barcode exposed. The retailer will specify their preferred shipping vendor. Bring the sealed package to one of their stores, where they will weigh and ship it. This is where you will pay for postage. It can be just as easy to return an online purchase as it is to make one. With a few clicks of the mouse and a few minutes re-packing, your package will be out of your hands, and your refund will be on its way back into your bank account.
