Hi! I'm Debbie Anderson for About.com. Using inserts for your shoes can help alleviate the pain and strain of standing on your feet for longer periods of time. So today, I'm going to show you a few tips about how to get the perfect fit when using inserts in your shoes.

Choose the Insert Designed for the Particular Shoe Style

First, when choosing an insert for you shoes, keep in mind that there are many different types of inserts depending on the type of shoe you wish to use inserts in. For example, there are inserts specifically designed for high heel shoes, exercise shoes, and everyday wear type shoes. So for tip number one, always choose an insert for your shoes that are made specifically for the type of shoe you are wearing and the kinds of activities you are planning to do while wearing that particular pair of shoes.

Be Sure to Pick the Right Size Shoe Insert

Next, when choosing a shoe insert, getting the perfect fit inside the shoe is essential to maximizing comfort. To do this, purchase shoe inserts that are within in the same shoe size range as the shoes you are placing the inserts into. Finally, to place the inserts inside the shoes, after removing the inserts from the packaging, use a pair of scissors to cut the shoe insert to the appropriate size for your shoes. It's important to note here that most shoe inserts have a small line showing you where to cut for specific shoes sizes, so just follow the line for your shoe size and then discard the excess shoe insert material.

Cut the Insert to the Right Size if it Doesn't Lay Flat in the Shoe

Then, place each shoe insert inside the shoe insole with the gel side facing down. As an added tip, after placing the insert inside the shoe, use your fingers to feel around the edges of the insert while it is inside the shoe to make sure that it is lying perfectly flat inside the bottom of the shoe. If there is any part of the shoe insert that is not flat, remove the shoe insert and carefully trim the excess edges of the shoe insert with your scissors until the shoe insert lays perfectly flat inside the shoe for a perfect fit!
