Hi! I'm Becky Beth Benedict and I'm here for Today, we're going to talk about an overview of The Taming of the Shrew by William Shakespeare.

The Taming of the Shrew Summary

Drunken tinker, Christopher Sly, becomes the victim of a practical joke when he passes out and is dressed up like a lord. When he awakes people tell him he has been crazy the last seven years and is actually a lord and that a troupe of actors is coming to perform entertainment, which follows.

Lucentio arrives in Padua with his serving man Tranio and Biondello. Lucentio falls in love with Bianca, who has two suitors and a rich father who will not allow her to marry until Kate, her shrewish older sister marries.

Lucentio disguises himself as a tutor for Bianca. Meanwhile, Hortensio, one of Bianca’s suitors takes on the guise of a music instructor for Bianca and decides to fix up her feisty sister Kate with Petruchio, his friend from Verona who is in search of wealth.

When Petruchio and Kate meet a war of words ensues–in the end Pertruchio announces his intention to marry her and claims Katherine has agreed. Kate becomes anxious when Petruchio is late to the wedding.

Once married Petruchio hurries Kate off to his home in the country on an unnecessarily laborious journey. He deprives her of food and rest to tame her.The tutors continue to pursue Bianca, who falls in love Lucentio (dressed as the academic tutor) and the two elope. Hortensio mends his broken heart by marrying a wealthy widow. Petruchio brings Kate to visit her family and friends in Padua.

On the journey, Petruchio calls the sun the moon and finally Kate begins to agree with her husband. Everyone is surprised to see that Kate is so civil. Petruchio heralds the importance of wives loyalty to husbands and poses a contest with the newlyweds&help; when the other wives are called they refuse to come, but Kate not only comes immediately but brings the other wives with her, thereby winning the contest for her husband. Kate and Petruchio leave to consummate their marriage.
