Transcript:How to Sew an A-line Skirt

Hi! My name is Cindy with Learn2SewFlorida.com, and today we're going to teach you how to make an A-line skirt with an elastic waist band.

Supplies to Sew an A-Line Skirt

All you're going to need for this project is a pattern, an A-line pattern, some fabric, thread, and elastic; that's it. We don't want to have a seam in the front of it, so our pattern piece is going to get placed on the fold of the fabric.

Most patterns, if you go and buy a commercial pattern, they will have a front and a back for you. You're going to see it looks like the letter A, and that's why we call it an A-line skirt, because it comes out like this.

Sew Along the Pattern Lines to Sew an A-Line Skirt

So I'm going to cut one more of these. So here's my front piece, the right side coming up, here's my back piece with the right side going down. So I'm going to go ahead and grab my pins; we want the edges of the fabric to be together. So we're going to do one side and then sew the other side.

And we're going to follow this edge to 5/8th-inch seam allowance all the way down. We're going to do the same thing to the other side. The next step to the project is going over the iron and pressing your seam allowance. Sometimes we sew our seams first and then we press; other times we press first and then we sew, so we have to fold this and press this first before we sew.

You always want to fold it twice to get rid of that raw edge. My second fold has to be big enough to fit the elastic through. Here's my elastic that I'm going to put through. After we press, we're going to throw some pins in it.

Make an Elastic Casing to Sew an A-Line Skirt

I need to make a casing for this elastic to go through. So we're going to follow this all the way around. We're going to sew close to the edge of the fabric down at the bottom. Okay.

So, now we have our little gap; we're going to put the elastic through. I'm going to put a safety pin on the end of this and in our little opening; I'm going to run the safety pin through. We're going to put it together underneath the sewing machine and sew the elastic together like this. And we're just going to go back and forth a few times just to hold this together. Now we're just going to pull the elastic till it goes up underneath our casing.

Now it's in our casing and we can sew this opening closed, and I cut those stitches to lock it in and then we're almost done with our skirt. We just have to do a little hem down at the bottom. When you sew a hem you want to sew it on this side of the fold so it holds our hem down for us. So we're doing a topstitch hem all the way around it.

Okay, so that's how you make an A-line skirt. It's very easy; you can make one too.

So that's Cindy with Learn2SewFlorida.com. Thank you very much. Enjoy your sewing.
