Transcript: How to Mat a Scrapbook Photo

Hi! I'm Rebecca Ludens for About.com Home and Garden. Today I'm going to show you how to mat a photo.

What is a Photo Mat?

Matting photos is a basic technique used in scrapbooking. Your goal for a photo mat is to create an even edge of cardstock around the whole photo.

Size and Trim the Cardstock

To begin, adhere your photo to the corner of a piece of cardstock, leaving an even amount of paper showing on the corner edges. Next, trim the cardstock along one side of the photo. Set up the paper on your trimmer so that the cut-line is in line with where you think the mat will look the most even with the other edges. Cut the last edge the same way.

Create a Double-Mat

Now your photo should have a frame of cardstock all the way around. To give your photo even more prominence on your scrapbook page, you may wish to double-mat it. This is a great idea for drawing the eye to your focal point photograph.

Add the Matted Photo to the Scrapbook

Now, you can add your matted photo to your scrapbook page. Matting your photos will help them stand out on your scrapbook page layouts.
