Transcript:What to Avoid When Running for Weight Loss

Hi, I'm Sara Fox here for About.com, and today we're going to review what not to do when running for weight loss, as outlined on About.com's Running and Jogging site. If you're trying to shed pounds through running, there are a few things you absolutely want to avoid in order to be successful.

Avoid Overeating When Running for Weight Loss

Consider the following: First and foremost, don't overcompensate for calories burned by eating too much. While you may feel hungrier as you begin your running routine, keep in mind that you have to burn more calories than you consume for weight loss to occur. This doesn't mean that you should starve yourself, but it does mean that portion control and healthy food choices are crucial in helping you meet your goals.

Along the same lines, don't eat the wrong foods. Instead, opt for a diet of lean meats, whole grains, fruits, and vegetables. Striving for the right balance of carbohydrates, protein, fat, vitamins, and minerals will keep you on the path to healthy weight loss.

Avoid an Irregular Schedule When Running for Weight Loss

One of the biggest setbacks in running for weight loss is running on on an irregular schedule. It's necessary to get physical activity each day, so going for a run one day a week simply won't cut it. If you can't run every day, set a goal for yourself of at least three to four times per week and stick to it.

Don't forget to challenge yourself while out for your run. Running the same route at the same pace is easy to do, but will get monotonous after awhile. To keep yourself motivated, you can incorporate speed work, which burns a great amount of calories over a short period of time, or interval training, which will help you build muscle mass while improving your resting metabolism.

Avoid Getting Discouraged When Running for Weight Loss

Don't get discouraged if you hit a weight-loss plateau. This is a common problem for many, and with a few changes, you can push past this troublesome issue. As you lose weight, your calorie needs change because it takes fewer calories to maintain your weight.

If you've noticed that your weight loss has tapered off, it might be time to start gradually reducing your calorie-intake. You can also increase your running mileage, which will help you burn more calories for continued weight-loss.

Tips for Running for Weight Loss

Running is one of the most vigorous exercises out there, and an extremely efficient way to burn calories. By avoiding a few common pitfalls, you can achieve your weight loss goals for a more healthy lifestyle.
