Transcript:Guide to RC Vehicle Sizes

Hi, I'm Danny from Marty's Hobbies in Thousand Oaks, CA. I'm here for About.com to explain how the RC vehicle sizing system works.

RC vehicles come in five basic sizes. They are scaled down versions in relation to their full size counterparts.

5 RC Vehicle Sizes

The five basic sizes are:

  • 1/24 Scale
  • 1/18 Scale
  • 1/10 Scale
  • 1/8 Scale
  • 1/5 Scale

Small RC Vehicles

Smaller RC vehicles are great to use indoors and are often a good choice for young beginners. Although these are great fun and can be used inside on rainy days, they will not handle well in harsh terrain.

Mid-Size RC Vehicles

A lot of mid-size RC vehicles can be used either indoors or outdoors. Novices and veterans alike can enjoy vehicles of this size. While they are fairly versatile, they will have trouble with more extreme environments.

Choosing a Size

When trying to determine what size RC vehicle is suitable for you, first answer these questions:

  • What types of areas are you going to be operating your vehicle in?
  • Is your skill level high enough to safely operate your vehicle?
  • Are there any local restrictions that would prohibit you from operating your vehicle?

Large RC Vehicles

Larger RC vehicles are great for outdoor use. These are the most popular because they can handle more abuse, and can be used in a large variety of places. Just make sure you have enough room!

And lastly, whether driving, flying or boating, be sure to have lots of fun with your RC vehicle!
