Transcript:How to Design a Jigsaw Quilt
Hi, this is Becki Stratton for About.com, and today, we're going to talk about how to design a jigsaw quilt. I'm going to use a pattern by Lehmann Quilting called Jigsaw.
Choose Fabrics to Design a Jigsaw Quilt
It's a good idea to plan your quilt first. We're going to use fat quarters, or 18-by-22-inch pieces of fabric. The size of the quilt will depend on the number of squares you need. Once you've decided on your fabrics, we're going to create a swatch sheet. That sheet will give us our layout of the different colors so that we won't get confused as we go.
Bag Your Fabric to Design a Jigsaw Quilt
Each fat quarter will be cut into pieces, and as you cut those pieces according to directions, you're going to place them in baggies labeled A, B, C, D and E. That way, we won't get confused and we won't have a pile of fabrics where we won't remember what we cut.
Build Blocks to Design a Jigsaw Quilt
The actual construction of the block starts with the large piece. Then we're going to build our block, and we'll have to incorporate the next interlocking piece for the next color as you can see here.So this is our next block. Once we've put our block pieces together, we want to sew them so they don't get mixed up. Press on one side, open, and sew the other side pieces. You have just created a block for your puzzle quilt.
Continue in this manner until you have completed all your blocks, place them in rows, sew them together, and you will have a puzzle quilt. Thanks for watching. To learn more, visit us on the web at About.com.
