There are few software programs that are used as often as Microsoft Powerpoint. It's a useful tool for anyone looking to jazz up a school or business presentation. This About.com video will break down all the basics to help you make your first Microsoft PowerPoint Presentation.
What is PowerPoint?
First thing's first, what is PowerPoint? Microsoft PowerPoint is a software program designed to help enhance any presentation. With it, you can completely customize your slide format, add transitions, sounds, pictures, links to webpages, and so much more.
Pick a Slide Type
Before you do anything you're going to have to pick a PowerPoint slide or theme to start your presentation. You can see the designs of various themes by scrolling your mouse over each one. Once you decide on the theme that fits your presentation, double click it to get started. Don't worry, you can always change your theme after you get started.
To add a blank slide you can press the "New Slide" icon in the top left corner or go to 'Insert' and access it that way, or click on the slides bar and hit enter. Most PowerPoint templates have a variety of different types of slides for you to use.
PowerPoint Offers Many Option
You can tailor your PowerPoint to fit the needs of your presentation. For example, if your presentation has lots of data, the program will let you insert pie charts, bar graphs, and tables to make the information easier to read.
To add different features to your PowerPoint presentation you can go to 'Insert' and scroll through the various options available. As you can see PowerPoint offers everything from an essay header to your favorite song.
How to Make Changes
On the left side of the screen there will be a list of all the slides you plan on using, if you click on the slide, that slide will come up in the main window and you can edit it from there. To edit something on your slideshow, such as a text box, just click on it and insert your text. Click on the box once more and you can get rid of it. You can also click and drag slides on the left side of the screen to change the order of your slideshow.
Use PowerPoint to Help YOU Present
The most important thing to remember when setting up your PowerPoint presentation is that in most cases it is a complement to help YOU present. Try keeping your PowerPoint to main points, figures, and images, and use the programs “Presentation” mode to type in notes and help you with the presentation.
