Hi, I'm Kostas Georgokitsos for About.com. Today I'll show you how to use slide masters in PowerPoint 2010.
What Are Slide Masters in PowerPoint 2010?
When you create a new slide with the "New Slide" button, PowerPoint uses by default the title and content layout. This has been set as the slide master, which means that every new slide you open will use the same template as the slide master. If you click on the down arrow instead, you are presented with a number of additional master layouts that you can choose from. These have predefined layout, theme and formatting.
Changing Slide Masters in PowerPoint 2010
To change the slide master and consequently the associated layout, press "View" and then "Slide Master" in the "Masters View" group. You can now see, on the left pane, your current slide master on top, and several supporting layouts below it. You can adjust both the master slide and any of its supporting layouts.
First, we apply a theme to the whole presentation. Click on the slide master in the left pane. Click the "Themes" drop down arrow and select a theme you like. In the same group, you may also make adjustments to the colors, the fonts and add effects.
Detailed Changes to Slide Masters in PowerPoint 2010
To make additional, more detailed changes, click on the title placeholder, and open the Format tab. To fill the text with a solid color, gradient or texture, go to the WordArt Styles group and click on the down arrow next to the underlined Capital A button. Create a style of your preference.
If you want to make changes to a particular layout, locate it below the master slide on the left pane. As an example, we'll use the title slide layout. Click on the background and adjust its size. You can also change the size and position of the title placeholder. Then adjust the subtitle placeholder accordingly. Now place your mouse pointer on its border. As soon as it turns into a double arrow, right-click on it. Select "Size and Position". Go to "Text Box" and select the type of alignment that you want. Press close. You can make similar adjustments to any other layout of the slide master.
Additional Tips for Using Slide Masters in PowerPoint 2010
When you're done with the changes, click on "Slide Master" and then on "Close Master View" to return to your presentation. Changes to the slide master apply to newly created slides. Some changes do not apply to slides already in your presentation. Therefore, it's recommended to make any changes to the slide master before you start creating your presentation.
