Hi I am Kathy Moore for About.com. Halloween parties and trick or treating seem to set off a candy frenzy every year. This program will discuss ways you can creatively monitor and control your kids consumption of Halloween candy.Set Candy Rules Before Halloween
If your kids go trick or treating it is important to set some guidelines beforehand such as no eating any candy until and adult has inspected it. And no eating of any unwrapped candy. As a parent it is your job to check out what the kids collect. If the candy has a torn wrapper or anything looks amiss, be on the safe side and throw it out.Then establish some simple guidelines that you and your children can agree upon. Here are a few ideas that I plan to use at our house.
Discard Unwanted Halloween Candy
Go through the candy with your children and help them choose to get rid of any candy they might not like and any candy that you do not want them to try.Choose a Daily Candy Limit
Set a limit on the number of pieces of candy per day. 2 or 3 ought to be enough for most kids.Decide What Time Candy Can Be Eaten
Establish a time when it is O.K. to eat candy. Avoid treats before meal times or right before bedtime.Find a Good Candy Stash
Agree on a place to keep the candy stash. You will want to choose a location that will allow you to monitor how often your kids are digging into it.Encourage Halloween Candy Sharing
Ask your kids to consider donating some of their candy to Grandma or an elderly neighbor. This will reduce the amount of candy in the house and introduce your children to the concept of sacrificial giving.No matter how much Halloween candy your kids have, do not forget to encourage them to spend a little more time brushing their teeth.
