Preparing Your Maternity Bag

At least a month before your due date, you should pack a bag for the hospital. Keep it near the door or in the car, and when labor strikes you will be all set to go.

What to Pack in Your Maternity Bag

Some important things to put in your bag are toiletries. You will need enough to get you through labor and a few days post partum in the hospital.

Labor can be a long process, and it is good to have something to distract yourself. Cards, crossword puzzles and music will all be good to have on hand during the hours that it will take for your baby to come.

Be sure to pack your camera and a battery charger so you can take plenty of pictures at the hospital. If you have a video camera, bring that too, along with extra tapes and batteries. When you are at the hospital you will want your cell phone and phone numbers for all the people you want to call to tell about the birth.

It is not practical to pack up your cell phone a month ahead of time, but you can pack an extra charger if you have one. Remember to pack a massager, massage oil and anything else that will help you relax and stay calm during labor.

Remember to Pack Post-Labor Items as Well

In a separate bag, pack the things that you will need for your postpartum days in the hospital. This should include a receiving blanket and outfit to bring baby home in. Pack clothes for yourself. You will still need maternity clothes after the baby is born. Expect to fit into what you were wearing in the sixth or seventh month.

Don't Forget Dad

Lastly, remember to pack clothes and toiletries for dad. When your bags are packed, place them by the door and wait for the arrival of your new baby.
