Hi, Im JJ Burkart for About.com. I'm going to show you how to play Blackjack.
Win Blackjack With a Card Hand Hitting 21
The object of blackjack is to beat the dealer. To do this, you must have a higher hand than the dealer without going over 21. Cards 2-10 are valued at face value. All face cards are worth 10 and Aces are either 1 or 11.
Before each hand players place a bet. The dealer then deals 2 cards face up to each player and one card face down and one card face up to himself. The goal is to get your cards to add up to something as close to 21 as possible, without going over 21.
For example, if were dealt an 8 and a 5 you would have 13. In order to receive another card you would say “hit me” and the dealer would deal you another card. If you got an 8 you would have 21. If you were dealt a face card, you would have 23 which is over 21 and referred to a Bust. You lose.
Let’s say that had 13 and were dealt a 5. You would have 18 and would probably choose to stand. This means that you aren’t taking any more cards and your turn is over.
Hitting and Standing in Blackjack:
If the dealer has an ace showing, players have an opportunity to place an insurance bet for have the amount of your original bet. Insurance bets pay 2 to 1 with the idea being that if the dealer has blackjack, you will break even instead of losing your original bet. Once insurance bets are placed, or not placed, the dealer checks his hidden card. If it is a face card or a 10, then he has black jack and pays out insurance bets.
If any player has blackjack then they neither win nor lose, but push. If a player has less than 21, they lose. If the dealer does not have blackjack or 21, then play begins with the player to the dealer’s left. Each player has a chance to hit or stand.
How to Split Bets in Blackjack:
If a player is dealt two of the same cards then they can split them. For example, if a player were dealt two 9s they could stand at 18 or split them and place another bet equal to the original next to the second 9. Taking hits on each 9. They could then take hit cards on each the 9s.
Blackjack Rules for the Dealer:
Once all players have either bust or stand at a certain number then the dealer reveals his hidden card. Most casinos have specific rules that a dealer must follow. Typically, a dealer will have to hit until his cards total at least 17. Also, he may not take a hit once he has 17 or more, regardless of what other players have.
If the dealer busts, then all remaining players wins a sum equal to his bet. If a player has a higher hand than the dealer he wins a sum equal to his bet. Usually a casino will pay 3 to 2 for blackjack. For example, if a player bets 10 dollars and wins with blackjack, he will receive 15 dollars.
