Hi! I'm Don Schechter for About.com Computing. Today I'll tell you about the basics for podcasting using Garageband.Start a New Podcast
First open up Garageband from your dock or applications menu. Click new podcast episode. Enter a name for your podcast and find a place to save it in the drop down menu. If you plan on creating more podcasts on the same topic, you may want to create a folder for them by clicking new folder. Click 'create.'Adjust the Podcast Presets
Before you begin, you'll want to take a look at the presets to make sure your podcast will be of good quality. Go up to Garageband on the menu and select preferences. In the general menu, you can change the default information that Garageband will use when exporting audio. You may want to use the name of the podcast for the album name.Adjust Input and Output
Click on audio midi. Here you'll find information about the audio output and input. You also have the option for optimizing for either more tracks which will allow you to compile more sounds at one time or you can optimize for less delay when you are podcasting live which creates a smaller buffer size. I'll choose this option. Below you can use the slider to adjust the keyboard sensitivity which will adjust the velocity level of the notes you play.Specify the Podcast Settings
Click on the export button. Here you can specify podcast settings. If you plan on using any kind of music or sound effects in your podcast choose musical podcast. If you plan on just doing straight speech, choose spoken podcast. You would only use the mono setting for speech, but it has a lower quality. Use the higher quality option for podcast that concentrate on music.Tweak Additional Podcast Settings
Under movie settings you can select from the drop down menu the way you intend on exporting your podcast if it contains any video. Typically the Web setting is most useful as it retains good quality and doesn't take too long to download. Use email if you plan on emailing a podcast containing video. Web streaming is specifically if you plan on having people stream your podcast. Video podcast is great for playback on iPods that support video. Finally, full quality will retain the same video resolution that the video and audio were imported with. At the bottom there is an option to set the artwork to the recommended size when you publish the podcast. Ill keep this checked off.
That should do it for settings that will affect your podcast. Now you're ready to start recording using Garageband.
