Transcript:How to Replace a Toilet Handle

Hi I'm Debbie Anderson for About.com.

Possible Reasons for Replacing a Toilet Handle

Your toilets flush handle can need to be replaced for all sorts of reasons, whether you dislike the aesthetic look of your toilets flush handle or you need to replace a flush handle that is broken, today I'm going to show you how to replace that Toilet Flush Handle with ease!

Supplies for Replacing a Toilet Handle

For this task, you will need:
  • a new toilet flush handle, which can be purchased for very little money at your local home improvement store
  • a pair of needle-nose pliers
  • and an adjustable wrench

Instructions For Replacing a Toilet Handle

To change out the toilet flush handle, first, lift off the top cover from the top of the toilet tank and set the lid in a safe place where it won't be bumped or prone to falling.

Inside the toilet tank, using your fingers or a pair of needle-nose pliers, unhook the chain attached to the long skinny rod of the old flush handle.

Using your fingers or an adjustable wrench, turn the reverse threaded nut on the the backside of the flush handle in a clockwise direction to loosen it and slide the nut off the long skinny rod.

Pull the flush handle and the attached long skinny rod out of the hole on the toilet tank and discard it.

Next, insert the long skinny rod of the new flush handle through the outside of the hole on the toilet tank so that the rod is facing down and carefully push the handle part into the hole.

Slide the nut for the new flush handle up the long skinny rod and use your fingers or an adjustable wrench to tighten the nut in a counter-clockwise direction.

Attach the chain to the end of the long skinny rod on the new flush handle.

Finally, carefully secure the top cover back onto the top of the toilet tank and flush the toilet to ensure the new flush handle is working properly.

And there you have it. A new aesthetically beautiful toilet flusher handle.
