Hi, I'm Nick, and today for About.com, I'm going to show you how to join the PlayStation Network.

Enter Information to Start on PlayStation Network

The PlayStation Network allows you to play games online and access the PlayStation store, absolutely free! To sign up with PSN, head to the PlayStation Network menu on the PS3's home screen and choose the Sign Up option. From here, you'll be able to create a new account, or sign in using an existing account. Choose the Create New Account option and you be prompted to enter the following information – date of birth, online ID, your email address and password and your name and address. If you're OK with this, click continue, otherwise click cancel.

If you're happy to continue, fill in the form you're provided with. First, fill in your country of residence, language choice and date of birth. Be aware that options marked with an asterisk cannot be changed after the account has been created. Next, read through and accept the Terms of Service. To read through the entire agreement, use the analogue stick to scroll through the page. When you're ready, click 'Accept'.

Set Up Email Options

Next, you'll need to enter your email address and password, as well as a security question to use in case of emergency. This process can be cumbersome if you're typing while using a PS3 controller – stick with it! You can cycle security questions to find the one most appropriate to you and then fill in the details in the box provided.

Creat Online ID for PS3

The next stage is to create an online ID. This will be what you'll known by online, so make it something you're happy to be displayed publicly! You'll also have to pick something unique, so don't be surprised if your selection comes back a few times!

Provide Personal Info

The final stage is to enter your personal information. This includes your first name, surname and gender, as well as your current home address. Once this information has been entered, you'll have the option to opt in to email updates from Sony and other third parties if you wish – leave the boxes unchecked if you'd prefer not to receive anything.

Before you confirm for the final time, you can review your information to make sure it's all OK. Click the edit button if you need to make any last-minute changes and then click Confirm when you're ready. If all goes well, your account will be created successfully!

Once completed, you'll be invited to take part in an optional survey, as well as select an avatar for your new profile.

Changing PSN Account Information

If you need to change any information, head to the account management menu and choose Account Information. Here, you'll be able to change details such as billing information, name and notification preferences.
