Transcript:How to Clean Your Piano
Hello, my name is Malcolm, I work at the Piano Workshop at Reigate, Surrey, UK and I am here for About.com to show you how to clean a piano.
What to Use to Clean a Piano
You need two cloths, one is dry, this one is just damp with hot water. First of all, you wipe the piano with the damp rag, that is all, very lightly, not putting any pressure on the piano at all, taking the dust off, and then quickly going over with the dryer rag just to take any excess water off that is on the piano. And again, using no pressure whatsoever.
Never use any furniture polish or chemicals on the piano. All you need is the water. If you use the chemicals you could possibly damage the piano. Just use soft cloth, stocking net or matted cloth, but also you can use for very quick dusting a sort of feather like duster, and all you need to do is wipe it.
Things to Remember when Cleaning a Piano
You take jewellery off to avoid scratching pianos when you are stretching across. Also you might like to clean the keyboard when you are cleaning the piano. Again, all you use is a hot, damp rag for taking off finger marks and follow up with a dryer rag to take any excess water off. I would clean the piano as often as you would dust your house, so once a week, twice a week, depending on how clean your house is. Thank you for watching my demonstration on how to clean the piano.
