Transcript:What to Do if Your Pet Food Is Recalled
Hi, I'm Amy and we are at The Pet Stop in Shawnee, Kansas. Today we are going to talk about what to do if you pet's food has been recalled.
Reasons for Pet Food Recall
Pet owners may worry and wonder what to do if their pet food is recalled. A consumer should first find out why the food is being recalled, an out break of salmonella for instance can require careful handling of the product. This information can be found on the company's website as well as by calling the number listed on the packaging. Try to follow any instructions given.
Discontinue Use of Recalled Pet Food
Next you need to throw a product away or return to to the store where it was purchased for a refund. It is very important that you do not continue to use the food!
If your pet has been consuming the food you should call your vet to see if there are any health concerns to be aware of.
Go ahead and switch foods, if you must change brands try to find a brand with similar ingredients as a change can be quite hard on a pets stomach. Introduce the new food slowly giving smaller servings at first.
Safely Discard Recalled Pet Food
When getting rid of the old food, it is important to seal it and place it in a covered trash can, if you choose to throw it away, in order to prevent your pet from consuming the discarded food.
Also if there are health risks involved with the recall make sure you clean any surface that the pet food came in contact with, such as food bowls or storage containers, using a good household cleaner to prevent contaminating any new food that is placed here. Some vets even suggest wearing gloves during the cleaning process to prevent yourself from getting sick.
