Transcript:How to Make a Devil Costume for Dogs

Hi, I'm Amy and today we are going to talk about how to make a devil costume for your dog on About.com.

Items to Make a Devil Costume for Dogs

Before starting your project there are two things I like to do and that is set out all of the materials I will need as well as draw a sketch of the costume I would like to make.  For this costume you will need:

  • A sewing machine.
  • A spool of black thread
  • Black ribbon, since this is for a small to medium sized dog I am going to use 24 inches of ribbon, depending on size you may want to do yours longer or shorter
  • 1/4 yard of red cotton fabric
  • A sheet of stiff red felt.  I recommend a sheet that is at least 12 X 18 inches.
  • Fabric scissors
  • A white painter marker
  • One red baby head band
  • Hot glue gun
  • Drawing compass
  • Straight pins

Sew the Dog's Devil Cape

First, with your white paint marker  draw your pattern on the stiff felt and cotton fabric. Overlay the two and then lay your black ribbon on top. Use straight pins to hold all three pieces together. Watch out, these are sharp.

Now we're ready to sew! I like to use a zigzag stitch as it is less likely to become unraveled than a straight stitch.

Make Devil Horns for Your Pet Dog

Slowly stitch the length of the Fabric and your cape is ready.  Now on to the most important part of the costume.  The Horns!

With your drawing compass measure the width of your baby headband. You will want to measure 3/4 to the full width of the head band.  With your compass set, trace a circle onto your red felt.  After the circle is complete you will draw a triangle out of the circle, like a quarter sized piece of pie.  Next draw two rectangles on each side of the circle.  These should measure about one inch.  This will be used to attach the horns.

Cut out the shape, folding the circle with the missing triangle in on itself and then use the hot glue to attach these.  Let them set for 20 to 30 minutes until dry and then fold the tabs under the baby headband also using hot glue to attach them.

Watch out because hot glue is not only hot, but can also be a mess.

Tips for Dressing Your Dog in a Halloween Costume

One word of warning, when tying the ribbon around their neck be careful not to tie it too tight, as this could be a choking concern.
