Transcript:How to Find Information on Pet Food Recalls
Hi, I’m Amy and we’re here at The Pet Stop in Shawnee, Kansas. With warnings in the news many pet owners worry about how they can quickly find out if a pet food they are using has been recalled.
Check the FDA for Pet Food Recalls
All pet recalls are listed with the FDA, and a quick run through of their website should provide pet owners with all of the information that they need: including which products have been recalled, why, and what dates and batch numbers to look for will be listed on the website.
Other Resources for Pet Safety
Pet owners can also contact the phone number or website listed on their food. The company is mandated to share any information on recalls and what to do if the food is recalled.
Other websites such as about.com have comprehensive lists of what pet foods have been recalled. One website petfoodadvisor.com even has email alerts so customers can be instantly notified of problems.
If you have a good local pet store the employees should also be able to provide you with any information you may need.
Look for Details on the Pet Food Packaging
Finally, it is important to know how to find a batch number and best by date on the pet food itself as this is what will tell an owner if their product has been recalled. The best by date is usually found on the side or back of a bag of dog food. It is often printed on the top or bottom of a can of dog food. The UPC code will be the string of numbers at the bottom of a bar code. If a batch or lot number is needed then the company will provide information on exactly what to look for.
