Transcript:Costumes for Dogs: Superhero

Hi, I'm Jacob Taxis for About.com. In this video, you will learn how to make a superhero costume for a dog.

Superhero Costume Materials

You'll need:

  • A hot glue gun or fabric glue
  • A variety of fabrics or old t-shirts in multiple colors
  • Velcro
  • Thick, colored ribbon
  • Scissors

Today, we'll be turning Marty the fairly large Golden Retriever into Super Marty. Depending on the size of your dog, measurements will vary.

Making Superhero Outfit for a Dog

First, the super hero shirt or breast plate. To begin, cut out a 10 by 10 inch square of fabric from an old t-shirt and fold over and glue the edges to create a hem. Using hot glue, decorate the square with shapes and symbols. For Marty, we've created an 'M' logo with red and yellow felt. We've also added some gold rope along two sides of the square for décor.

Second, cut four strips of ribbon each measuring about 14 inches in length. These strips will wrap around the back of the dog, holding the square in place over the dog's chest. Each should be approximately 14 inches in length. Again, measurements will vary according to the size and breed of your dog. Glue each strip of ribbon to the reverse side of the square. Stretch out the entire piece and glue velcro to the ends of each ribbon strip as needed so that the square will fit the dog's chest comfortably and securely.

Instead of this breast plate option, you could simply decorate an old t-shirt, cut off the sleeves, and slip it onto the dog.

Making Superhero Cape for a Dog

Next, the superhero cape. Cut a large rectangle from an old red t-shirt. It should be approximately 22 inches long and 14 inches wide. Fold over and glue to create a hem. Then decorate the cape as desired. We've enhanced Marty's logo by enlarging it and adding gold rope around the edges of the yellow circle. We've also added some gold rope along the top edge of the cape.

Lastly, cut two strips of ribbon. Each should be about 7 inches long. Glue one end of each ribbon to opposite corners at the top of the cape. Then, glue velcro as needed to the reverse sides. To attach the cape to your dog, simply lay the cape on the dog's back and gently stretch the ribbon strips over the dog's shoulders, attaching them just under the dog's neck.
