Hi, I’m Linda Becker, the bra lady, from Linda’s Bra Salon in New York City, here for About.com. I have some great advice for bra fitting for petite size women who may not be choosing the right fit or the wrong kind of bra.

Don't Estimate on the Sizing

This is Erin and she’s a 30 C. A very uncommon size and very, very hard size to find. Erin has a very, very tiny back. That’s what makes her a 30. The common mistake with girl’s that are 30’s what they do is they buy 32’s because they can not find a 30. So, all of their bras are too big for them. They’re too big in the back, their cups move away from them. They look sloppy in their clothes. They’re uncomfortable all day. It’s a very hard thing, it’s just as hard for a girl who has very small cups and small back as it does for a girl who has very large breasts and a large back. It can be a very difficult thing.

Look for a Molded Fit

This bra is great for Erin for a couple of reasons. One is it has a nice molded cup that lifts her up and gives her a nice smooth, up shape, without being really padded so it doesn’t make her look bigger but yet it’s proportional to the rest of her body cause Erin’s a tiny girl. The strap is completely adjustable. Which is wonderful because she’ll never have that strap falling off her shoulder. As soon as it gets loose, she can tighten it up a little more. So, that’s a wonderful feature for almost any woman, but especially for a petite woman. So, this is a wonderful bra for Erin.

Find Comfort in Wireless Bras

Erin is wearing a soft cup and what a soft cup means is there is no underwire. Some people are very sensitive to the under wire. A lot of girls sometimes want bras that they can maybe clean the house in, lay around in bed, they don’t need a lot of support because they have small breasts and there’s perky breasts – so they can wear a bra without an underwire. It’s a very, very comfortable bra, it’s great if you’re taking a long trip on a plane, if you’re not feeling well, a lot of times when women are ill we give them bras without a wire because it’s just much more comfortable, you can lay in bed with it. So it’s a good bra. But some girls prefer to wear it because they don’t think they need an underwire, so it’s a nice bra. Very comfortable bra.

Start on the Loosest Hook

Still very snug in the back and we always want to start out on the loosest hook when we start our bra out and as it gets looser we want to tighten it up. We never want to start out on the tightest hook, because when you do that in about a week, 2 weeks, your bra is already stretched out and it’s no good.

Avoid Very Padded Bras

This is a very common mistake that girls with small breasts make: they buy bras that are very padded and much too big for them because first of all they think it’s going to make them look bigger. But what it really does, is it’s very sloppy, it gaps here in the breasts so they have always these big lines in the clothes. It’s too big under here, so it rides up. It rides up in the back because it’s much too big in the back. Even if they wore it on the tightest hook it would still be much too big, your bra should never fit like that in the back. It should always be snug. So, that’s a very very common mistake that little petite girls make. Bras that are just much too padded and much too big for them.
