Hi! I'm Debbie Anderson for About.com. Going outside to enjoy the warm summer days and nights can become a bit uncomfortable if you live in an area with a lot of mosquitos, however, sometimes using mosquito repellents made with harsh chemicals can be as irritating to your skin as the bites themselves. So today, I'm going to show you how to create your own mosquito repellent without using harsh chemicals to do it.

Mosquito Repllant Supplies

For this task, you will need:
  • a small spray bottle
  • a measuring cup
  • a measuring spoon
  • lemongrass essential oil
  • cedarwood essential oil
  • eucalyptus essential oil
  • lavender essential oil
  • a bottle of witch hazel

Mosquito Repellant Oils

First, pour a half teaspoon (½ tsp) of lemongrass essential oil, a half teaspoon (½ tsp) of cedarwood essential oil, a half teaspoon (½ tsp) of eucalyptus essential oil, and a half teaspoon (½ tsp) of lavender essential oil into the small spray bottle.

Mix the Mosquito Repellant

Carefully mix the four essential oils together by lightly shaking the bottom of the spray bottle until all four essential oils are thoroughly mixed together.Next, pour four ounces (4 oz.) of witch hazel into the small spray bottle. Then, carefully place the nozzle back on top of the spray bottle until the nozzle is twisted onto the bottle good and tight. Briskly shake the spray bottle until the witch hazel and essential oils are thoroughly mixed together.

Apply the Mosquito Repellant

Finally, spray a small amount of the homemade mosquito repellent on any exposed skin and thoroughly rub it into the skin before going to outside areas where there are a lot of mosquitos present.

Organic Mosquito Repellant Tips

Now, just remember to shake the bottle to thoroughly mix the repellent before each application, and as with any repellent, when spraying the repellent toward your body, always avoid getting it in your eyes. With this all natural mosquito repellent you're sure to rid yourself of nasty mosquito bites without using harsh chemical.
