Transcript:How to Make Facebook Friends

Hi, I'm Don Schechter for About.com Computing. Today, I'll show you how to meet people online in Facebook.

Create a Free Facebook Account

Open your preferred Web browser and navigate to Facebook.com. Facebook is a free online site that connects people in social networks. If you already have a Facebook profile, sign in using your email and password. If you don't have a profile you can register for free by clicking sign up.

Make Friends With Your Email Contacts

The fastest way to connect with people you know is to click on "Friends" at the top. It will use your Gmail, Yahoo, or Hotmail account to find contacts from your address book who are on Facebook. Type in your password and click "Find Your Friends." Facebook will automatically find contacts you can add as friends on Facebook. Check the boxes of people you want to add to your friends. If there are people you do not want to be friends with from your contacts, uncheck the boxes. Click "Add to Friends" and those with check boxes will be sent a notice that you have invited them to be friends. The next time that person logs into their Facebook, they will see your invitation and when they accept you will be able to see them in your friends list.

You can invite other people you know who do not already have Facebook by checking their names and click invite to join. Ill just click skip.

You can find other friends in a similar way from friends you have on AIM instant messenger or another email application like Outlook or Apple Mail.

Tap Into Your Educational Networks

If you have entered education information in your profile, like the college or high school you went to you, you can find friends from those places under the "Find Friends" window under more ways to find friends, or in the edit profile window under education. Click either "Find Classmates" from your high school or from your college. Then you will see a list of people who graduated the same year you did from your high school or college. To add someone to your friends, click add to friends to send then an invitation. To search for friends from different graduating years, click a different year in the drop down menu at the top.

Make Friends With Colleagues

You can also find friends at your workplace in a similar fashion by adding your work information to you profile and then click find coworkers at the bottom.

You can become a member of different networks, which will open more opportunities to find friends in your area or an area you used to live in. Click the arrow next to Networks at the top and choose join a network. Join a college network, a regional network or a work network.

There are many ways to find friends on Facebook either from places you lived or worked or by joining different networks.
