Hi, I'm Zoya Popova for About.com, and today I'm going to show you how to find a job using LinkedIn.
Create a Public Profile
If you're looking for a job, the first thing to pay attention to is an updated and accurate profile. Make sure to keep your education and skills up to date, and your job descriptions precise and informative.
You want to expose your resume to the maximum possible number of people, which is why it's a good idea to make it public. Go to linked.com/settings, choose the Profile tab and go to the "Edit Public Profile" link.
This is where you can make your profile visible to anyone, including those who are not in your network, and those who don't have a LinkedIn account at all. This will enable people who are searching for an employee via Google or Bing to access your information.
The information in your profile will also determine the potential job suggestions that you receive on your LinkedIn main page. Based on your industry and location, LinkedIn will cross-reference potential employers in your area and alert you to job openings.
Follow Companies that Interest You
Alternatively, instead of waiting for LinkedIn to alert you about employment opportunities, you can follow a number of specific companies that you're interested in. Next to the search bar, select "Companies" from the drop-down menu and type in the name of the company. When the company's profile appears, click "Follow". This way, you will be notified every time a new position opens.
Study Company Profiles
And don't underestimate studying company profiles. If you go to the Careers tab of a company profile, you can browse through the employees to see if any of them are connected to the people you know. This symbol, for example, means that you have a third-level connection to this person through a friend or colleague of yours, so there might be a chance of getting introduced to them personally.
Apply to Jobs on LinkedIn
Finally, LinkedIn also serves as a job-listing site. In the search bar, select "Jobs" from the drop-down menu and click the "Advanced Search" link. Here, you can specify your job criteria, such as industry, location, posting date, and others. As search results appear, click on the opening, review the job duties and apply for the position by clicking the application button.
