Transcript: How to Keep Track of Your Keys
Hey guys - Jonathon Stewart here for About.com with today's 90 second quick tip. There's nothing worse than heading out the door and realizing you just can't find your keys, other than coming home to a locked door and discovering the same thing. But take a look at these key tracking tips, and you'll be on your way, lickety split. Check it out.The number one key to keeping track of your keys is not to take them for granted. Think of your keys as small friends who help you make sure no one else but you can get into your home, car, or office. This way, you're less likely to misplace or forget about them. Yeah, sounds a little silly I know, but it actually works. You guys wanna grab some lunch?
Establish a Routine With Your Keys
Establishing a routine is another essential ingredient. Start by designating one single spot for your keys at home. This can be a hook by the door, a dish on a counter, or a drawer specifically earmarked for them. As soon as you let yourself in, get in the habit of putting your keys in their safe zone before you do anything else. You might also think about making a pass over your key ring to whittle out ones that you never use. I know the key to the padlock of your high school locker may be hard to part with, but it makes this next tip easier to manage.Stick Your Keys in the Same Place
Whenever you leave your house, pick a pocket to place your keys in, and stick with it every time. The smaller your key ring, the less obtrusive they'll be as you go about your day. If you have to carry them in your purse, be sure to designate a special pocket for them there as well. Finally, try to get in the habit of locking any door in your life with the key that unlocks it as you head out. Automatic car locks and doors that lock on their own are common culprits in getting yourself locked out.Keep a Set of Spare Keys
And finally, think about giving a trusted neighbor or relative a complete set of spares. Getting most keys copied is as simple a heading to your local hardware store, and costs a fraction of what a locksmith will charge to bail you out. Thanks for watching!
