Transcript:How to Clean a Computer Keyboard

Hi, I’m Zack Heene for About.com. I am going to show you how to clean a computer keyboard.

Cleaning Supplies

The items you will need are: a dust-free cloth, cleaner (water with a drop or two of liquid detergent), and a can of compressed air.

Tap Out Dust Particles

First, turn your computer off and unplug the keyboard. Then turn the keyboard over and gently shake it and tap on the backside of it. This will help remove some of the dust particles in it.

Spray Compressed Air

Now get the compressed air can, and hold it at a 45 degree angle, slowly pull the trigger and move between the keys like this. This forces the dust, lint and particles to blow out. Make sure you blow between all the keys. When you have finished, turn the keyboard over and shake it and tap it again.

Apply Cleaner to Cloth

Now put a small amount of cleaner on the cloth the make it damp, not wet. A wet cloth could ruin the keyboard. Carefully wipe down all the keys and its area, you might need to do this a few times. Most manufacturers don’t recommend using alcohol or other harsh solvents, since it can remove or damage the letters on top of the keys. When you are done, make sure the keyboard is not damp, if it is then wait a while before you plug it back in.

This process not only makes your keyboard look nice and clean but it sanitizes it too. Thanks for watching, I’m Zack Heene for About.com.
