Transcript:How to Change Drive Letters in Windows XP

Today I'll show you how to change the drive letters in Windows XP. This is useful after a new hard drive installation or just to keep your computer organized.

Getting Started Changing the Drive Letters in Windows XP

First go to start, choose settings and click on control panel. Open administrative tools, then click on the computer management program. A new window will open. Click on disk management. If you can't see the disk management option, look under the storage option.

Changing the Drive Letters in Windows XP

On the right side of the screen, find the drive you want to change. You cannot change the C drive, because this is your main partition. But all other CD or DVD drives can be changed.

Right click the drive, and choose Change Drive letter and paths. Now click on the Change button. A new window will appear where you can choose the letter you wish to assign to the drive using the drop down menu. Click ok.

A confirmation window might appear. You should know that if you have software on the drive you are changing, it might not work after a letter change. But nearly all software defaults to the primary drive so do not worry. Click yes.
