Transcript:How to Parallel Park a CarHello, my name is Januarie Joubert, and I’m one of the senior instructors for the Professional Driving School of the Americas, that’s right here in Manhattan. Today, I’m here with About.com and we’re going to go over how to make a successful parallel park.
Parallel parking can be a bit of a challenge for a lot of people. On the road test you only have to parallel park on the right side of the road. You won’t have to parallel park on the left side for a road test.
Pull Up Next to VehicleSo, the procedure is – you signal, at 30 feet in advance before you get to whatever vehicle that you want to park next to. Once you get to the vehicle and you get to a nice smooth stop, you don’t want to pull up too fast. You want to pull up nice and easy. You don’t want to get too close. You don’t want to one too far away either. You want to be about a foot or two away from the vehicle that you’re parking next to.
Align Cars by Looking Through Rear WindowThe most important aspect from that point once you pull up – a lot of instructors use mirror to mirror but in reality that doesn’t matter because if it’s a bus or something you’re not going to pull up to the mirror of a bus if you’re parking a car, right? The only thing that’s important is the rear of the vehicle. So a really good field of training is looking through your rear window in the back where you can actually see all of the back of the vehicle that you’re parking next to.
Check Your Mirrors and ReverseSo, after stopping, the first thing you do is you put it into gear before you steer. You look over your left shoulder to make sure there is nobody walking behind you. Then you look over your right and proceed to go backwards until you can see the back of the vehicle on your right side. Then you simply turn the steering wheel one circle to the right. You come back until your mirror comes to the rear of the vehicle and then you simply stop.
Steer Car to Within One Foot of CurbTurn the steering wheel one circle back to the left, go back in a straight line and stop about a foot from the curb because you have to be within a foot when you park your car at a test. Simply turn your wheel all the way to the left and come back till you’re parallel to the curb. And that’s it. You’re done. You’ve parked the car.
