Transcript: Make Pizza With Your Kids
Hi, I'm Zachary Fisher, and I'm Heidi Dehncke Fisher for About.com Parenting. Today we're going to make a pizza. With all of today's distractions, it's so important to spend quality time with your kids. What's really fun is to make pizza with your kids.
Pizza Ingredients
To make this pizza, you will need:- flour to dust the dough prep area
- 3 tablespoons flour
- 1 pre-made dough for the crust
- 8 ounces mozzarella cheese
- 4 ounces tomato sauce
- 3 tablespoons cornmeal
- 3 tablespoons olive oil
Heat the Pizza Stone
The pizza stone actually has to go in the oven and heat up for about 45 minutes. And the oven has to be turned up as high as it will go.This oven goes to 500.
Flour the Dough Prep Area
The first thing you have to do, Zach, is put some flour on the board so you can actually start to make the dough. So just kind of sprinkle the flour all around.I get the dough pre-made fresh from a local pizza parlor.
Toss the Pizza Dough
So I thought it might be fun to try and do what they do in the Italian pizzerias with flipping the dough around. Zach, do you want to give it a shot? See if you can get some kind of momentum goingYou're giving it a good shot.
Finish the Dough
Kids can help with almost every phase of making a pizza. It's especially fun for them to roll the dough and build the pizza.Let's make a little ridge for the crust with our fingers – let's just pinch it all the way around.
We have to put the olive oil on. You're just going to dip it in and lightly brush it across the dough.
Talk to Your Child
Cooking together is also an opportunity to talk open and honestly with each other and to grow even closer. While the olive oil is being brushed on the pizza, you have some time to talk to your child. I like to ask Zach about his day or how school is going. It helps me know what's going on in his life, and the cooking keeps the conversation light and fun.
Build and Bake the Pizza
Be sure to dust the bottom of your pizza with a few handfuls of cornmeal. Build the pizza by lightly drizzling sauce on the dough, then adding the cheese.Slide the topped pizza on to the stone. Try to place it evenly inside the oven for equal heat distribution. The pizza should bake for 12 to 15 minutes.
