Hi, I am Liz Hanssen for About.com and I am going to talk to you about home schooling your tween.
Utilize Education Resources
As you begin to home school an older child you will start to notice that his or her abilities have surpassed your ability to teach. There are a wealth of resources you can go to -- one the internet and even colleges. Many of the online courses for high schoolers will offer you the option of obtaining a high school diploma. Many homeschoolers, however, take the GED and that serves as their credentials for their high school education.
Keep Good Records
The more record keeping that you do along the way the easier things will be both at the midyear progress reports and at the end of the year. It also will serve as a more comprehensive picture of your child's high school education if you home school for the long term.
Find Group Learning Activities
As your child grows older they might need more social interaction and at that point it is often good to look for group learning activities so that they will have the social contacts that they will start to seek out more and more.
Internships and Volunteer Work
Another important thing about home schooling your tween is the option of having them engage in an internship or volunteer work. It is always good to ask, look around. Whatever your child is interested in, you can find someone to mentor them.
Course of Study
As your child gets older it is important for them to take on more and more responsibility for their studies. They will naturally develop interests that they will want to pursue, but they will still be expected to study other subjects that they may not be as interested in. As they complete their high school education and work toward college, they will need to have those skills and they will need to make sure they can get their work done.
