Hello, I am Richard Estep, Director of The Boulder County Paranormal Research Society located in Boulder, Colorado and I am here for About.com to discuss The Sefton Ghost profile.

Where did the Sefton Church Ghost Originate?

The Sefton Church ghost is an interesting image. it shows the interior of a church, taken in September of 1999, in Merseyside, in the United Kingdom. Nobody was visible when the photograph was taken, but when the photograph was developed, we see what appears to be a male figure dressed in black, or at least in dark clothing, with a white collar, very reminiscent of a priest, a vicar, or a pastor.

Reasonings Behind the Haunting

It makes complete sense that a pastor would haunt a church like this; somewhere where he has spent a great deal of his life, was perhaps very emotionally attached to. The church itself has no history of paranormal activity, hauntings or legends, at least that I am aware of, and certainly I have researched this. We don't know who the photographer was and how this photograph came to light, and that may be suspicious, in and of itself.

We do know that the pub next door to this church, called the Punch Bowl has a reputation for being haunted, specifically by the apparition of a man in blue garb, believed to be a sailor of some type.

Why Churches are Commonly Considered Haunted

Churches are a type of building that often have ghost stories attached to them, and there are a number of theories to why this might be. Churches, particularly in Europe, are extremely old buildings, dating back many hundreds of years. There are also burial grounds, of course, consecrated ground. So people live their lives in and around the same village, in and around the same church, and they develop many emotional attachments to them, and it is theorized that that continues after the death of those people.
