Transcript:Haunted Places: The White House

Hello, I am Richard Estep, Director of The Boulder County Paranormal Research Society located in Boulder, Colorado, here for About.com to discuss the most haunted places in the United States.

One of the Most Haunted Places is the White House

It should come as no surprise to anybody that the White House would be a top of that list. But it really begins in earnest with the Lincolns. Lincoln foretold his own death. And he had a number of dreams that he reported in advance, where he was lying dead in state at the White House, which did actually come to pass. Secret Service agents have encountered Lincoln's form.

President Lincoln's Ghost in the White House

But perhaps the most impressive sighting came during the second world war when Winston Churchill was staying in the Lincoln room. He was taking a bath and having a cigar and a glass of brandy. He got out of the tub, dripping wet, naked, walked into the Lincoln bedroom and there, standing with his arm on the fireplace, is Abraham Lincoln, looking Churchill right in the eye, and looking quite embarrassed. So two of history's greatest leaders, one of them half-drunk and half-dressed, both meeting over the space of a hundred years, great story.

Black Cat Sightings in the White House

There is supposedly a phantom black cat that haunts the basement of the White House, which doesn't sound very impressive, but there is a legend that goes along with this that every time the cat is seen, there is some kind of disaster that will befall the United States. The cat was seen Before the outbreak of the Second World War, the cat was seen before the outbreak of the Great Depression.

Also, the wife of President John Quincy Adams is seen hanging out laundry to dry in the White House. The sheer amount of emotion that was felt there, everything from the Civil War to Pearl Harbor, 911, it would be surprising if the White House did not have many ghosts.
