Hi, I'm Shane Murphy, your video game guru for About.com. Today we'll take a look at the most popular online paintball game, Paintball Smash.

Introduction on How to Play Paintball Smash

Unlike all other flash-based paintball games, Smash is constituted by a fully fledged 3-D environment that you move your character through, pretty impressive compared to the competition. Like any first person shooter, your primary goal is to move through the level and eliminate opponents by shooting them. Even after you grab the flag, you still need to mark all of your enemies before you can complete that stage. Each different level features coins you can grab for points and health packs that will recover some of your "hit points." Although your starting gun has unlimited ammo, you can find souped-up markers that are better but eventually run out of paintballs. Smash even resembles a FPS in ways that defy the logic of paintball: each enemy has a health bar you must deplete before they are fully "marked." Additionally, head shots at close range will cut off more "health" than limb shots from far away. Finally, your markers inexplicably have "recoil."

Tips on How to Play Paintball Smash

If you're playing Paintball Smash for more than just a way to kill time, there are a few tactics you can follow to rack up the highest possible score. You'll notice that your enemies are a little slow witted: if you sneak up on them they won't fire until hit, so make sure you have your sights set low to compensate for recoil then rapidly fire multiple times to prevent any counter attack. Also be aware that you can't hurt enemies until they have the red health bar appear above their head and the cursor turns red, so don't bother floating shots from far away. Since you must eliminate each enemy you should challenge each one individually, eliminate them, then move on. Try moving around cover to avoid having to engage multiple opponents at once; this can also keep your foe moving, and hence not shooting since they can’t do both at once. This is actually your best bet for avoiding hits, since your enemies will prove to be pretty accurate despite your movement and long distances. One thing is clear: trying to "dodge" a shot at the last second doesn't work. If you've mastered the original or want a change of scenery, you can always play Paintball Smash 2. This is essentially the same game, just set in an arena setting. Thanks for watching. To learn more, visit About.com's video game channel.
