Hi. I'm Pelpina Trip, here for About.com. In this video, I'll explain how to make a compost bin from a regular plastic storage container.
Supplies for Creating a Compost Bin From a Plastic Container
Here's what you'll need:
- A plastic storage container. You probably want one not smaller than 18 gallons. The bigger, the better, but you also want to keep in mind you're going to have to store it somewhere convenient.
- Lid for your bin, and if you can obtain a second lid that's even better. You can use one to lock off the bin, and the other one to put at the bottom to catch any liquid.
- Thirdly, you'll need a drill and drill bits.

Here's how you prepare the bin. To make air circulate through the bin, you'll need to drill holes in it - on all sides, even the top lid and the bottom of the bin. It doesn't really matter what size drill bit you use, as long as air is circulated well and the holes are not big enough for rodents to enter the bin.

Now, you want to place your bin in a convenient spot - perhaps right outside your kitchen door, or by a vegetable garden if you have one. And you're done!
What Goes in a Compost Bin From a Plastic Container
You can put anything in this compost bin that you would throw in a normal compost pile: fruits and vegetables peels or leftovers, leaves, coffee grounds, egg shels, weeds, and much more. One personal tip I can give you: cut vegetable and fruit peels in smaller pieces, they will decompose faster.
