Transcript:What Is the Mediterranean Diet?

Hi, I’m Maria Saracen from ArtfullyNourished.com and this video for About.com is all about the Mediterranean Diet.

Mediterranean Styled Food

There are many things to love about the Mediterranean lifestyle, especially the food!  And as it turns out, the Mediterranean diet is considered to be one of the healthiest on the planet.  The reason for this is because studies have shown that people living in the Mediterranean region have lower incidences of three major health issues: heart disease, cancer and diabetes. This is compared to people living in the United States, Canada and Japan.

The Mediterranean diet is a diet that’s based on eating habits that have existed in the Mediterranean region for thousands of years. These eating habits include whole, unprocessed food such as whole grains, vegetables, fish and healthy fats and oils.  It’s also a diet that relies on local food that’s eaten in season.

Benefits of the Mediterranean Diet

Now, one of the biggest benefits of the Mediterranean diet is is that it’s high in Omega-3 fatty acids which are abundant in fish. Omega 3 fatty acids are essential fatty acids that are believed to protect against heart disease, inflammation, certain types of cancer, diabetes and many other diseases.

So if you’re looking to stay healthy or manage an existing disease, the mediterranean diet may very well be a great option for you.  As a complement to this diet, it’s important to take time to relax and enjoy your meal, preferably in the presence of good company.
