Hi, I'm Laureen Wallravin, nutritional therapist and founder of RelishedFood.com. I'm here for About.com and today we're going to talk about how you can increase potassium in your diet.
Eat Fruits And Vegetables to Increase Potassium in Your Diet
Among other things, potassium is a mineral that helps to balance our pH, regulates blood pressure, and aides muscle growth. To increase your dietary potassium intake, consider the following: Potassium is abundant in a wide array of fruits, which are always a great way to start your day. A bowl of cantaloupe and watermelon for breakfast is ideal, while slicing a banana into your cereal will add around 420 milligrams of potassium to your meal.
Spinach, tomatoes, and mushrooms are all rich in potassium, and combine to make a delicious and nutritious salad for lunch. If you feel like something a little more hearty, veggie and turkey burgers are also great sources for potassium. Raisins, strawberries, apricots, and citrus fruits are easy snack foods for mid-morning or late-afternoon, all of which are ideal sources of potassium.
Tips for Increasing Potassium in Your Diet at Dinner
Before you leave for work or school, be sure to grab an orange on your way out the door, or slide a box of raisins into your lunch bag. Greens, beets, soy products, peas, avocados, beans, potatoes, beef, salmon, and cod are all full of potassium and combine in a number of ways for a well-rounded dinner. A green salad with kidney beans and avocado, alongside a lean grilled steak, or salmon with green peas and mashed potatoes are just a couple of options.
Why You Should Increase Potassium in Your Diet
Potassium is an essential nutrient for our bodies, and one that can easily be found in a variety of foods. Maintaining a balanced and diverse diet is the best way to ensure that you're replenishing your potassium stores on a consistent basis.
