Transcript:How to Pack Glasses

Hi, I'm Jacob Taxis for About.com. In this video, you will learn how to pack glasses.

Materials for Packing Glasses

To begin, you'll need:

  • Moving box, medium in size
  • Packing paper or newspaper
  • Tissue paper
  • Packing tape
  • Bubble wrap
  • Marker
  • Glasses

Prepare Work Station and Line Box

First, prepare a work station to make packing your glasses easier. On a large table or countertop, set out your glasses, packing tape, tissue paper, packing paper or newspaper, and the moving box.

Before packing, line the inside of the box with a large sheet of bubble wrap or a few thick towels. This padding should cover the entire inside of the box and should hang over the sides. Next, add a layer of crumpled newspaper or packing paper on the bottom of the box for extra cushion.

Packing Glasses

To pack glasses, begin by placing one glass near the corner of the stack of packing paper. Taking two sheets, fold the paper loosely over the glass as you roll it across the paper. Tuck in the edges of the paper as you roll to concentrate the paper around the glass. When wrapped, place the glass upside down inside the box. Avoid packing glasses on their sides.

How to Pack Stemware

To pack stemware, begin by fully wrapping the stem of the glass in tissue paper. Then, wrap the piece as you would a normal glass, tucking in the edges of the paper as you roll. Be mindful of the stem as you roll the glass across the paper by concentrating extra paper folds around it. When finished, pack the stemware in rows with the rims facing down.

Continue this process until you pack the box tightly. Make sure there is a thick layer of crumpled packing paper between every layer of glasses inside the box.

Sealing Box With Glasses

Fill any empty space in the box with bubble wrap or paper so that the glasses do not shift around inside the box during the move. Write "Fragile: Glassware" with an arrow indicating how the box should sit inside the truck.

To make the whole process a little less stressful, pack your glasses early over the course of a few days. Use plastic cups in the mean time. These can be packed quickly on the last day.
